Porrim Maryam is an 18 year old woman with a passion for gender studies, horticulture and vampires.

Porrim is the daughter of a Filipino-American family and grew up in San Francisco, California. Her father is a ferry-driver and her mother is a registered nurse and struggle to make ends meet in the high cost-of-living city. Porrim's relationship with her parents is strained mostly out of their concern for her life choices, especially her chosen religion (Wicca), her tattoos and piercings, her sometimes provocative outfits, her sexual orientation, her frequently changing relationships, her extreme makeup, her choice of friends, her political activism and last but not least her gender transition. Still, their relationship is a loving one and Porrim is going to be very homesick since moving to the AU campus will be her first time moving out of her parents house.

Porrim lives a significant portion of her life on the internet. She maintains several social media profiles, including a microblogging platform that she uses to repost political news and recipes, post selfies, and to publish updates on her ambitious fanfic rewrite of Twilight where Bella is saved by a mysterious girl named Alice Cullen. The series has garnered her a modest internet following and receives both praise for better examining the problems inherent in a relationship with significant power imbalances and also for not having a grown man fall in love with a baby. However, the work was featured on the front page at one point and so she's been battling some significant harassment from internet trolls for several months, the refrain mostly that she's ruining a widely beloved canon, intermingled with plenty of racism and transphobia. She has been contemplating changing platforms to a website with better moderation.

In the 'real' world, Porrim was an extremely bright student with modest grades who was frequently in detention or on suspension because of rules violations, insubordination or smacking a bitch. She was hated or loved (or both) by her teachers because she would hold them to task if they could not defend their curriculum or school policies from severe scrutiny, and if they couldn't she would break them. This only got worse in high school when she began her transition and entered puberty. Porrim found a home in the goth clique at her school, social deviants who rebuked the larger social norms. She was an easy target of bullying because of her awkward appearance and her promiscuity (or her perceived promiscuity at any rate). She found a large amount of judgement even among her fellow goths. Compartmentalization and avoidance were necessary survival skills she developed, and further pushed her towards her free expression on the internet, the home of most of her closest friends she has never met.

Porrim's hobbies are many. She has dabbled in interior decorating, tarot, astrology, gardening, crochet, fashion, baking, potion brewing, and role playing games on top of most common interests like books, video games, movies and television shows. Despite a passionate dislike for the social mandate of women to be homemakers and mothers, she finds a great amount of pleasure in most of the activities involved in the stereotype in spite of herself, and has a keen motherly instinct. Porrim tries to be active in political activism and has participated in several protests and marches. Her favorite event is the San Francisco pride parade, and one of her dreams is to march along with it.

Alternate University is a great opportunity to move out of the house, escape her hometown, expand her horizons by meeting people from literal other universes. She figures there's a small chance she'll meet someone stranger than her.
